Out of the archives: cutting-edge, space-age yacht video from the last century

Yacht brochure of 192-foot motor sailer Islander

Former motor sailer Islander is in the news because she's undergoing a complete refit to be relaunched as a true motor yacht. The photos in the brochure shown above demonstrate that even as a motor sailer Islander had the lines of a motor yacht all along so the change seems like a logical choice. At 192 feet in length and a beam of over 36 feet, Islander was able to boast a remarkably large plunge pool that was 22-foot long with a 6-foot depth on the sun deck.

Westport 112 video of the 1990s

We've gone back to vaults to bring you the original Westport 112 video from the last century. The publication below shows the W112 of the 21st century. For anyone familiar with the Westport yachts you'll see that the model has undergone a number of improvements in the intervening years. One of the most striking changes is the hard top that was not a component of the original Westport 112 model. Watching the video you'll also see how Westport yachts cleverly dealt with the enormous television monitor in the main salon during those dark ages before flat screen TVs.

Time Warp: July 4th 1997

This combination of hand-drawn and computer-generated art work was created by Laser Advertising in 1997 for Lucayan Beach Resort and Casino in the Bahamas. We developed the cartoon character Lucky Luke based on the red and white striped lighthouse at Lucaya. Lucky Luke appeared in a series of informal invitations. In this illustration, we also animated the King and Queen of Hearts, two slot machines and the pair of dice enjoying the pool. Even though the 4th is not a Bahamian holiday, Lucayan Beach made sure that their stateside guests would have festivities on Grand Bahama.

Time Warp: Father's Day 1996

On Father's Day 2009, we've gone back to the archives and dusted off this Father's Day themed project from 1996. Laser Advertising designed and produced a large number of advertising and direct mail campaigns for Lucayan Beach Resort and Casino in the Bahamas.

Back in the days before the TSA, we could -- and did -- fly commercial to Grand Bahama for just the evening. One could take an after work flight from Fort Lauderdale, land on Grand Bahama island, and fly home again that same night. At Lucayan Beach one could have dinner, see a show, check out the casino, and still be home in time for a good (if rather short) night's sleep. At the time, it wasn't remarkable. While it was a bit more exotic than a typical night on the town it was a rather economical evening out considering everything that it included.

Bob Saxon Associates ads of the 1990s

 

When Laser Advertising moved into the  Cordova Road building, Bob Saxon Associates had offices upstairs. Over the years, we worked closely with Bob Saxon to develop ad series that promoted the charter concept, educated the consumer and set the BSA brand apart. Bob Saxon was willing to consider imagery unusual in the industry. As a result, we were able to design ads that had original cartoon illustrations, race horses, penguins, jig saw puzzles and hieroglyphs (not all in the same ad however). These high-visibility advertising series ran in international publications during the late 1990s and early 2000s. The ads were effective and generated significant response. In addition to developing his own brand, Bob Saxon was keenly interested in raising the profile of the charter industry as whole. BSA achieved global recognition in yacht management and charters until its sale in 2002 to Camper & Nicholsons.
