Over-the-top hat design wins prize at a Kentucky Derby party
This year our yacht club included a hat contest as a part of the Derby Day Party festivities. With a prize up for grabs I grabbed a hat and a glue gun and got going. While I've worn many hats, it never occurred to me to make one. Not only am I not particularly crafty, I also lack the dexterity and patience required of such an endeavor.
Given that this competition was held at a party where mint juleps began to be served just after lunch, I figured I'd have a good chance as long as it was colorful, big, and involved a lot of horses. Using a wide-brimmed sun hat that I had on hand, I purchased a set of 20 plastic toy horses. Next I looked up the numbers of each of the contestants and printed out the appropriate color and number combination.
I really wanted to match the numbers with the correct color of horse, but the toy horse collection included Shetland ponies, draft horses, palaminos, and other breeds not in contention. So the literal interpretation of the horses was dropped and I affixed the numbers willy-nilly.
Believe it or not, 20 horses does not fill up a hat and I was a bit disappointed with my first arrangement of horses around the brim. But a purchase of artificial roses really bulked up the effect. After a quick lesson on glue-gun techniques from Natalia I went to town. In less than a half hour the hat was assembled.
