Carambola, commonly known as starfruit, is in season now and through the next couple of months in Florida. Laser Advertising has some of this unusual fruit in our galley. Home-grown starfruit can vary widely in quality and some are extremely bitter. Even at their best, starfuit does not have a lot of flavor but is very juicy with a slight tang. One of the best aspects of the starfruit is its distinctive shape. When sliced, each piece resembles a star and makes a delightful garnish to salads, main dishes and desesrts. The fun eye-appeal of the fruit is a nice way to dress up holiday buffets and cocktails. Starfruit do not travel well and are hard to find in grocery stores. If you live in the right climate and have the space, the starfruit makes a great addition to the home garden. The tree is compact, no larger than a citrus tree, and produces reliably every year. The Rare Fruit and Vegetable Council of Broward County is an excellent resource for carambola and other unusual fruit.
