As the holiday season approaches, we look to shops, catalogs, and computers to help us find the perfect gift for friends and family. What to get a yachtsman or yachtswoman who has it all is certainly a quagmire. Not to worry, this season head to Newport, RI for your gifting needs. My first stop was the Armory, an antique and fine art center. I have never found lost treasure, but I imagine that walking into the armory is a similar experience. When you first walk in you see jewels, lanterns, antique sailing gear, furniture from the Far East and of course life size mermaids. The Armory provides the unusual and unexpected for gifts this year, and I doubt many places have dressers from the New York Yacht Club, strings of pearls, and iron mermaid bottle openers all in the same place! I highly recommend anyone visiting the area to check out the Armory.
My second stop, and to be honest the only reason I went to Newport in the first place, was Re-Sails. This unique company started by making large duffel bags out of used sailcloth. The durable material is perfect for travel (do we ever really know what our bags go through?). Now their line of products has grown to include small bags, computer cases, vests, hats, and even jackets. With the expanded line Re-Sails has begun to use new materials. At the store you will find helpful and accommodating staff, but if you can’t make the trek to Newport, Re-Sail products are available on-line at www.resail.com. Unfortunately one can only experience the Armory in person. Happy shopping!
