FYBA May Broker Boat Show

 

The May 2009 Florida Yacht Brokers Association monthly broker showcase had 55 boats on display from 45' to 144' and over 250 brokers and yacht professionals in attendance. Held at the Lauderdale Marine Center, the venue had the slip capacity and parking availability to host the event with ease. Total Wine provided beverage service and Myra's Personal Touch catering provided the food. 

One of the evening’s highlights was the delectable artistry of Chef Patrick Roney of M/Y Kapalua (see photos left, provided by Lara-Jo Houghting). Chef Patrick made waves at the 2nd Annual Pebble Beach Food and Wine Festival and wowed everyone who had the chance to taste his creations here in Fort Lauderdale at this FYBA event. Kapalua is part of Northrop and Johnson charter fleet and is listed for sale with Northrop and Johnson sales broker Gregg Child.

A visit to the Higgins Armory Museum

Design inspiration comes from many sources and we always keep an eye out for out-of-the-ordinary visuals when we travel. The Higgins Armory Museum in Worcester, Massachusetts is a treasure trove of centuries-old armory and state-of-the-art early 20th century design.

The Sea of Pink Boat Parade was an event sponsored by Gilman Yachts over the last few years to benefit the Komen South Florida Race for the Cure for Breast Cancer.

Catching the eyes of yacht captains

Lauderdale Marine Center is running a new series of ads targeted specifically to yacht captains in The Triton, the publication with the tag line "News for Captains and Crews." Lauderdale Marine Center has undergone a massive transformation and is now the largest yacht repair facility in the U.S. The facilities encompass 50 acres, 3300 feet of riverfront dockage, 125 floating slips and 29 mega yacht berths. A total of 19 covered sheds contain 15 million cubic feet under cover. The facility also includes the full complement of resources for repairs and refits, a full marina, on-site independent marine contractors, service centers for yacht builders and an office complex.

The objective for this ad series was to focus in on a specific market – captains – and the needs of that market. The ads are designed to be immediately recognizable and instantly understood. The design uses the client’s corporate colors and logo in a consistent manner to reinforce the corporate identity. Each ad includes a bold image that communicates directly to the target readership. These ads address knowledgeable professionals and give them the information that they need to make a decision favorable to the client. A publication reaching a broader audience would require a different approach; but this is a solution perfect for this client and this readership.

Lauderdale Marine Center is also increasing its visibility by hosting events on-site that attract members of the yachting industry to see the facility first-hand. Lauderdale Marine Center is a familiar name in the community so it’s important to make it clear that the expansion and enhancements have been significant.

Program Designs for Scapa Piano School

I've recently taken delivery of one of my favorite annual projects, the Piano Recital Programs for The School for the Creative and Performing Arts (SCAPA) in Kentucky.

The Piano Program Director of the kids from Elementary through High School is the brother of our bookkeeper, Annie Rosse. She wanted to bring her brother well designed programs as a birthday present and I was enlisted to help. The programs were a big hit with the kids who used them as small yearbooks and event sent one back to me, fully autographed along with a CD recording of their recital. Needless to say, I was moved.

Once I heard them play and realized their incredible talents, I understood how much they deserved a program that matched their skills at the piano. From Beethoven to Billy Joel, they are truly fantastic.

These children have amazed me year after year and I always find it a pleasure to help them create a unique piece for their Spring Recital. As the school has grown, there are now two recitals and two different programs. From what I hear, kids, parents and teachers are all very proud.

V(ery)-Kool Flowers at Cafe Bluefish

Café Bluefish, near Fort Lauderdale beach, was the venue for the second Triton networking event in the month of May. The colorful café was made even more attractive by the beautiful flower arrangements of Hilary Frischhertz from Yacht Flowers, who displayed her tropically inspired work throughout the tables and bar, giving the place a very festive flair.

A former Chef and Stewardess, Hilary has ample experience in yachting and knows how to create floral arrangements that suit the taste of her clients while considering what is unique about each vessel. She is also available for special events from boat shows to charters, weddings and private parties.

Also on display was Scott Frischhertz of V-Kool, installers of the clear window film that reduces heat build up, but allows light to pass through, ready to answer questions about his product.

The mood was cheerful throughout the well-attended event and the setting was superb with a relaxed crowd enjoying the fresh ocean air of a beautiful Fort Lauderdale evening.

Bob Saxon Associates ads of the 1990s

 

When Laser Advertising moved into the  Cordova Road building, Bob Saxon Associates had offices upstairs. Over the years, we worked closely with Bob Saxon to develop ad series that promoted the charter concept, educated the consumer and set the BSA brand apart. Bob Saxon was willing to consider imagery unusual in the industry. As a result, we were able to design ads that had original cartoon illustrations, race horses, penguins, jig saw puzzles and hieroglyphs (not all in the same ad however). These high-visibility ad series ran in international publications during the late 1990s and early 2000s. The ads were effective and generated significant response. In addition to developing his own brand, Bob Saxon was keenly interested in raising the profile of the charter industry as whole. BSA achieved global recognition in yacht management and charters until its sale in 2002 to Camper & Nicholsons.

Hot off the press: Anjilis yacht charter brochure

The new 16-page yacht charter brochure for the 161-foot Trinity Yachts Anjilis is back from the printer. Laser Advertising created this yacht brochure for Camper & Nicholsons International. Matt Emerson of the Fort Lauderdale office of Camper & Nicholsons coordinated the project. Laser Advertising provided the layout, typeface selection, photo editing, location-specific photo research, headlines, and copy.

On location on Staniel Cay: Video and photo shoot for brochure and movie

We flew to Staniel Cay in April to shoot photos and high-definition video for a current client project. The flight on board the Watermakers Air Cessna Caravan was smooth and quiet. We toured Staniel Cay by golf cart and took an Intrepid ride in the waters surrounding the island. We fed the pigs at Major Cay, fed the sharks at Compass Cay, and fed ourselves at the Staniel Cay Yacht Club. Shown here are a few video clips and photos. Once the projects are complete, we'll post them on this blog.
